The obverse sides of all the notgelds depict an auto-da-fé, the symbolic burning of several liberal Austrian newspapers. This is a sign of the times, as anti-Semitic figures viciously attacked what they called the \"Judenpresse\" (Jewish Press). The newspapers shown were actual publications at the time. The reverse of the 10 +20 heller notes contains two anti-Semitic quotes, and on the 50 heller note, a plea to join the German-Austrian Anti-Semitic Coalition, and to read \"die arische (christliche) Presse\" (the Aryan Christian Press) instead of the newspapers being burned on the obverse due the \"Perilous Threat of Judaism\". This plea is accompanied by a Swastika, which in all likelihood is the first printed use of a swastika in connection with an anti-Semitic message. The quote on the 10 pfennig note is from Josef von Scheffel, a famous 19th Century German poet and writer (bio below). It states: “The disdain of the Germanic people of Semites is not based on religious differences so much as on blood, race, heritage (ancestry), ethnicity and culture”.The quote on the 20 pfennig note is attributed to the Composer Franz Liszt although its origin has been disputed. It states that \"the day will come when all Christian Nations have to decide if the Jew can live in their midst or be expelled. This is a life and death decision\".These rare set consisting of the 10, 20 and 50 pfennig banknotes were issued on April 16, 1920 by the Anti-Semitic Coalition and are signed by its leaders. The bills are ornately engraved in multiple colors in an art nouveau/art deco style.
