Antique 18th Century rare George III gilt metal (Pinchbeck) etui case, hinged lid opening pushing the button, the body shaped to contain a scissors, profusely chased and engraved with scrolls and cherubs on a matted ground.
Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc invented circa 1720 by Christopher Pinchbeck. It became very popular as it looks like gold but was much lighter. One of the biggest benefits is that it stays unoxidized for a long time and have a shiny gold appearance. Later in the 19th century Pinchbeck was eventually replaced by 9 carat gold.
Such gilt metal etui cases were fashionable and valuable accessories for ladies in the 18th and 19th century, often used as pendents for chatelaines, this particular piece dates to about Great Condition - No damage, just general wear.
