This listing is for an exceptionalrare piece of late 19th century Hawaiian tapa cloth. Made by pounding the fermented inner bark of the wauke (paper mulberry)plant and finished offwith the hālu’a maka ‘upenawatermark (tapa-beater design resembling net mesh). Rare large size. This was cut fromtheiho sheet of abadly-damagedkapa moe blanket. Measures 22\" x 22\".Very thin and finely made. This is the last of the 19th century Hawaiian tapa I have. All others have sold.
