This is a small collection of ten antique 19th century Napoleonic prisoner of warsnuff spoons the largest of which measures 3 inches long. These snuff spoonswerehand carved from cow or mutton bone (not from any endangered species!) probably by Napoleonic prisoners of war to raise money for food and they date to around the early 1800\'s. Snuff taking - sniffing a pulverised Tobacco through the nose - became a fashionable and widespread activity in England in the late 18th / early 19th century. Snuff spoons in various sizes and shapes such as these were used with snuff boxesso asnot to dirty the fingertips. The condition of all ten snuff spoons is quite good with no cracks, splits or damage. For accuracy in my description I will point out that there are signs of wear as is to be expected through age and use and some snuff staining in places but nothing too serious or detracts in any way. This small collection of 10 Napoleonic prisoner of war hand carved snuff spoons would make an ideal gift or a great addition to any collection.
