Antique Russian Orthodox Icon 19th Century Our Lady of Tikhvin

Size:12 1/2\" high x 10\" wide[31.5 cm x 25 cm]; thickness of the panel 3/4 inch[2 cm]

Age: 19th Century.

Medium:Egg tempera,Embossed silver leaf colored by yellow varnish, on wood panel.

Iconography:In this Russian North regional Icon, the variation of the Hodegitria Mother of God stems from an icon that appeared in 1383 in a beam of light, floating on the strem Tikhvinka near town of Tikhvin, Russia.A church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, was built near the place, where this miraculous icon made its appearance. The city of Tikhvin (was believed) protected from the invading Swedish armies at the beginning of the 17th century due to the presence of the original of this icon.

Important provenance:This icon is from the Estate of the Duchess of Caylus, Ludmila Progery ( the dynasty of the Duke of Caylus, d 1679) The Duchess was the niece of the Russian artist Alexandre Yevgenyevich Iacovleff (Russian-French, 1887-1938). Good friends andneighborsof the Duchess home in Tuxedo, New York, The Callvery family, were a Distant relatives of Abraham and stable state of preservation typical for the antique 19th Century Russian Icon. Two slats and small piece of wood on verso are missing. See photographs.
