ANTIQUE 19thC EDO PERIOD JAPANESE CAST BRONZE MIRROR, CRANES & TURTLE, DEEP EDGE

Description:

A traditional antique Japanese cast bronze mirror, displaying a typical design of two cranes touching beaks with the mouth of a turtle at the centre, amongst stylised landscape and pine tree motifs, floral border, and raised rim.

Estimated to date from the early 19th Century, the bronze cast surface has an aged green patina. The reverse side is tarnished, but smooth.

Japanese bronze mirrors were introducedinto Japan from China and Korea during the Yayoi period (about 300 BC - AD300). At first they had a religious function and were regarded as symbols ofauthority. By the Nara period (AD 710 -794) mirrors were being made foreveryday use, with the increasing use of Japanese designs, such as nativeplants and animals symbolizing good fortune. Japanese mirrors mostly have acentral boss, often in the shape of a turtle, which is pierced and a cordpassed through for holding. During the Edo period (1600-1868), mirrorsdecorated with lucky symbols or Chinese characters were typically given atweddings. Bronze mirrors were replaced by glass after the Meiji Restoration(1868).
