Description:

An antique 19th Century tin glazed earthenware albarello drug jar of waisted form, decorated in blue, ocre and pale green with foliatepanelssurrounded by trellis and coloured bands to the upper and lower rims. The jar stands on a raised foot, with unglazed foot rim, and would serve as a very attractive looking flower vase.

Basic information:

Analbarellois a type of maiolicaearthenware jar, originally amedicinal jardesigned to holdapothecaries\'ointments and dry drugs. The development of this type of pharmacy jar had its roots in the Middle East during the time of the Islamic conquests.

Brought to Italy byHispano-Moresquetraders, the earliest Italian examples were produced in Florence in the 15th century.Albarelliwere made inItalyfrom the first half of the 15th century through to the late 19th century.The jars are usually cylindrical with a slightly concave waist, and were generally sealed with a piece ofparchmentor leathertied with a piece of cord.
