Description:

An dramatic and highly decorative antique Meiji Period 19th Century Japanese patinated bronze vase, with applied dragon creeping around the side, and a toad to the other side.

The inverted balustershaped vase stands on a raised splayed circular foot, and is adorned with a superbly cast feathered dragon, with the upper body and head clinging waisted mid section of the vase, its long tail extending around to the other side, and its writhing legs, all illustrating movement and naturalistic form. A toad is perched on the opposite side of the vase to the dragon\'s head, just out of view.

Both creatures are extremely well cast in bronze, with excellent detail to the body of the toad, and fine feathery beard, whiskers and mane to dragon.

The bronze surface has a fine reddened patination, artistically applied by the craftsman, as well asa fine deep polished caramel patina.

The base is signed with a four character mark within a raised panel.
