ANTIQUE EAPG RUBYSTAIN BEAD & SCROLL GETTYSBURG 1863 SOUVENIR TOOTHPICK HOLDER

Abeautiful piece of early American made pattern glass in the form of a lovelylittle decorated toothpick holder. It ismade in a crystal or clear colored glass and has been decorated with ruby stainaround the top portion of the piece and gold trim on the top rim. The inscription “Gettysburg, 1863.” isprinted in white on one side. Thepattern is called “Bead & Scroll” but there seems to be much debate on whowas the maker of this pattern.

Thispattern, with ruby stain decoration, is pictured in the book Glass Toothpick Holders: Second Editionby Neila & Tom Bredehoft and Jo & Bob Sanford on page 212. The authors say that others have attributedthis pattern to U. S. Glass but they were unable to document this and have thuslabeled it as made by an Unattributed or Unknown maker. Others also attribute this to RiversideGlass. In fact I recently bought thisout of a large, old time Riverside Glass collection, so that collectorobviously thought this was a Riverside Glass piece.

Ifyou are not familiar with the NTHCS (National Toothpick Holder Collectors’Society) it is a great organization and you can learn more about them andcollecting toothpick holders at their website.

Age and Condition

Thispiece dates to circa 1900.

Itis in very good to excellent condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of mydescription of this item. There is somewear to the gold on the top rim and to the ruby stain and to the white printed souvenirinscription – see the photos. There is avery minor amount of roughness/wear to the foot. There are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs. I see only a fewvery light signs of use. Really inremarkable shape for a 115+ year old piece of glass. Please keep in mind these photos may be blownup at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger inthe photos than it really is.

Pleasenote: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not amark on the piece. It will be eitherjust to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on theright side of the photo.
