EXQUISITEANTIQUE JAPANESE NEGORO LACQUERDISH
Edo / Meiji Period 1800\'s GorgeousJapanese red and black lacquerplate withbrilliant handlacquered coloration. Negoro ware is named after its original place of manufacture at the Negoro temple in Japan\'s Kii Province during the fourteenth century. The objects are crafted from wood and then lacquered, first with black and then with vermilion. The red lacquer wears away gradually and irregularly with use, producing the effect of natural aging for which these pieces are highly appreciated. Stunning hand carving with raised plum blossoms and bold, graphic imagery. The central triangle most likely has deep symbolic meaning. In Japanese mythology it represents harmony, and in Shinto, the stars of the cosmos.
Displays magnificently. Measures approximately 8 1/4\" across, and in excellent antique condition bearing just minor wear commensurate with age.Quite a long process went into creating fine examples such as this one. Handsomely hand crafted of wood, dried completely, carefully carved, sanded, thenmany layers of lacquer were applied, each requiring time to dry slowly before the next was brushed on. Dates to the late Edo or Meiji period, mid 1800s. Signed on the underside. Exhibiting the traditional elegance of the Shogun and Samurai era, would makean exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Japanese antiques. Absolutely gorgeousEdo / Meijiperiod example of the strength and presence of Japanese lacquer ware.
