A REMARKABLE OVERSIZED FOLIO, THE DECORATIVE ART OF LEON BAKST.

COSTUME AND SET DESIGNS, FOR BALLETS RUSSES.

This is a remarkable and impressive folio, very rare. Large volume, profusely illustrated with 77 full colour lithograph plates under captioned monogrammed tissues, some with silver and gold ink highlights, many double-page. A magnificent work.

Book: The Decorative art of Leon Bakst. Issued by London: The Fine Art Society, 1913, in large format. Contents on gray handmade paper, with illustrations comprising 77 separately printed and mounted full page lithographs, many double page, all others full page, mostly in full colour, with hand-painted gold and silver highlights. Works in set design and costume design. This is the true first UK edition, which is bibliographically known to have been limited to 250 copies, although none of the copies destined for the United Kingdom appear to be numbered. Very scarce - small edition. The size of this impressive folio is approx. 39cm X 29cm X 6cm . Top Edge Gilt ( TEG), other edges deckled or rough-cut. This is one of the most impressive art folios we have had the pleasure to offer for sale. Interesting and insightful text by Alexandre Arsene and notes on the Ballets by Jean Cocteau. Please see the photographs for a selection of the plates and text. Book condition: Externally, excellent. Internally, a few very occasional small spots near the deckled cut edges of the pages ( mostly lower edge), as is typical to deckled pages, occasional light staining to upper edge, light and infrequent, as per photos, occasional light marks. Some pages slightly carelessly opened along the deckled edges, leaving short tears or chips, this is typical if a book has rough-cut, deckled pages, and is thus not detracting. One plate with a short tear to margin, which was previously reinforced on reverse, leaving, over the years, a rectangular mark, not particularly detracting as the watercolours have colour differentiation in the background. This plate is specifically photographed large as photo 3, below. There are no bookplates or gift inscriptions. A lovely copy of a book that is now over 100 year old, certain to please a collector.
