This is an antique Russiansterling silver cigarette case with a stylish niello exterior decorationas pictured.
It was produced in the Moscow workshop of Vasily Rukashikov circa the1890s and assayed in Moscow by Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin (Assayer 1898 - 1914).
Niello is an alloy containing silver, copper, lead, and sulphur. It is rubbed into an engraving on gold or silver which turns the design black. This technique remained very popular in Russia until the end of the 19th century.
The case measures approximately 7.5cm wide by 10cm highby about 10mm thick(when closed) and weighs4.52 imperial ounces (128.2g) which equates to 4.1 troy ounces.
There are condition issues. The casehasthetypical surface scuffs,scratches and signs of wearthat all silver objects such as thisalways attract over the years, commensurate with age and use. In addition there are several age related edge dings plus there aredents and depressions allaround the bodywork. There is a slight gap along the leading edge of the lid when the case is closed. I have picturedthis clearly in the photographs above so that you canmake a judgement before offerding. The clasp andhinge are both inworking order but the original internal elastic cigarette retainers are both missing. If you intend to use the case as designed then these elastics will need to be replaced. The easiest way to do thiswould beto swap a couple over from a cheap modern metal case.
The case wouldbenefit from a sustained polishto restoreformer glory.
