Antique Victorian Scottish Pebble Brooch .....I love this very good example of a Scottish Silver Pebble brooch - the size is really good and perfect for fastening a pashmina on the shoulder.This open circular brooch is fitted with eight beautiful pieces of polished Agate / pebbles and set in a silver frame and rear.
It fastens on the rear with a pin and c clasp.Size: 1 3/4\" (4.5cm) in diameter Condition

Scottish Agate orPebble Jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria. When she travelled to theHighlands with Prince Albert she fell in love with the dramatic landscape andwent on to purchase Balmoral, the rest as they say is history. This love extended to all things Scottish andwhen the London papers reported that the couple were wearing “polished pebblebrooches made from local stones” it set a trend that would last for decades andeven spread to Europe.

Written examples ofthis sweeping fashion are to be seen in the novel written by Elizabeth Gaskellin her novel Cranford (1851) set in the Cheshire village of Knutsford where oneof the characters – Miss Pole was wearing no less than 7 Scottish pebblebrooches!
