Beautiful pair of mid-century Venetian Muranosommerso art glass apple and pear bookends with green aventurine leaves and interiors.Sommerso or \"submerged glass\" wasdeveloped in Murano Italy during the late 1930\'s and was made popular by Seguso d\'Arte & Mandruzzato family in the fifties.It is a form of art glass where layers of color are formed by dipping a mass of molten glass (such as aventurine) into another mass of molten glass (often clear), then hand blowingthem into a desired shape. Aventurine glass occurs when small flakes/particles/crystals of gold, copper and silver are added to molten glass. Aventurine results in the apple and pear\'s leaves, stems and interior color and sparkle when seen in the light.

Unfortunately, the tip of the apple\'s leaf was broken off sometime during its 60+ years. Otherwise, each piece remains in excellent vintage condition. There is no maker\'s mark or useful labelthat could identify the artist but they are of high mid-century Murano quality art glass andbelieved to have been purchased around 1954.

The pear is approximately6 1/2\" in height, 13\" at its widest point. The apple is 4 1/2\" tall and approximately 14\" in diameter. Their combined weight is7.9 pounds.
