Aboriginal fish bark painting North East Arhnem Land natural ochres on bark

SIZE: 29cm by 62cm

This painting was collected in the 1970s from North East Arnhem Land. The bark is in excellent condition with no pigment loss and very straight.

Australian Aboriginals have painted on barkfor at least the last century, probably much longer. Paintings collected early this century bypioneer ethnographers have immediate impact with their simple and direct style. These were painted for ceremonial use andthen destroyed. The highly developed andrichly patterned art of the bark painter which is practiced today is a directcontinuation of this early tradition.

The paintings are done on well seasoned andflattened bark from the Eucalyptus tree. The pigments used by the artist are natural ochres mixed with fixativessuch as wild ochred juice or modern alternatives.

Painting designs and stories pass fromfather to son. Their exact form is notcopied but certain aspects and events in the myth and certain totemic designscan only be painted with the artists permission and only after matureceremonial status or initiation is reached. There are four stylistic types of bark painting.

The style of this bark is known as East orNorth East Arnhem Land style. The keyfeature of this style is the intricacy of detail. The artists of this area cover the entiresurface of the bark with their design in a complex interlocking pattern ofcrosshatching, diamonds, bands, animals and figures. The paintings generally tell the story ofmythical ancestors, their origins, travels and important events relatingspecifically to the artists clan. Thecrosshatching background are replicas of body paintings which the men displayon their chests during ceremonies. Theseare generally symbolic of the person’s clan country and, according to theritual the events that link it.
