Acrylic on canvas, Rory Wagner \"self portrait\" Very Rare:
$25999.00

This original painting is believed to be a very rare \"self portrait\"of Rory Wagner himself, possibly painted when he was living in Baltimore,Md in the mid to late 70\'s. Signed and dated 1976 or 78. Or it could have been painted when he came to Taos in 1978? There is not a title on the back of canvas,
It is framed and measures 50W X 60H. Right now as far as I have researched this size is typical of his work. Mostly very large paintings. It is believed to be a rare self portrait of Mr. Wagner. Upon further research after this time frame he painted cowboys and horses, then portraits of random people and some Native Americans, and more southwest and Native American paintings and always influences of himself. I have only seen realism paintings by him. Nothing abstract.
More information about his art pieces at this link: This painting is in original frame. 50\"wide X 60\" tall. Must ship in wood crate for price listed. If you want it shipped unframed w original frame taken apart and canvas detached I will consider a $2500 deduction from final price. Or can be picked up local also with a $2500 deduction. Taoshas long been a Meccafor those in search of a life at its largest; those who refused to compromise, and those who demanded freedom in their daily existence. Nor is it a surprise that one of his favorite early subjects was the cowboy ?that American icon of don\'t-fence-me-in heroism. What is surprising is theexquisite integrity of each painting. These pieces are created meticulouslyfrom Wagner\'s photographic memory - often after only a brief encounter with thesubject portrayed.Soon after he arrivedRory happened into the gallery of RC Gorman. RC became his mentor and helpedhim get settled into the artistic community. They became lifelong friends.
Rory was a self-taught painter, he was initially drawn to the work of the Dutchmaster of portraiture, Vermeer. One of his favorite early subjects was theAmerican Cowboy, an icon of don’t fence me in heroism.
Wagner was uncompromising in his work. If he wasn’t satisfied with a painting,he was known to destroy it and start anew. Of the 6-12 canvases that annually passed under his intense scrutiny, each glow with a passionate presence. He builds his own stretchers andstretches each canvas himself. The next phase is the application of titaniumwhite over multiple layers of sanded gesso. After this step the subject issketched in and the painting begins. Rory blends the complex skin-tones byrubbing pigment onto the canvas. (Wagner often jokes that he rubs instead ofpainting.) To achieve the authenticity of beadwork and feathering Wagner oftenuses small double aught brushes. \"It takes me hours and hours, day uponday, to complete every one of them.\"Since the mid 1980\'s the faces of indigenous peoples have replaced hiscowboys. As always, Wagner did his homework. With the same meticulous careused to build each image, he researched the smallest details of the subjects hepaints. Wagner continued to be fascinated by the commonalities of tribeslocated thousands of miles apart, while living in different regions of theworld.Rory\'s work almost defies description. He paintedprimarily large canvases, but even in his smaller pieces there is a compelling,larger-than-life quality. Is it the eyes? Each face demands your attention withthose incredibly luminous eyes. It is difficult to look away, to break thespell; and when you finally do, you are inevitably drawn back. Yes, it is theeyes! Mr. Wagner\'s faces transcend the ordinary and explore the nobility of ourhuman potential. In 2006, Rory received the New Mexico\'s Governors Award for Excellence in the Arts. Rorywas a protégé of R.C’s who he met in Taosin the 1970’s and became life-long friends with. In 1991 Gorman commissionedWagner to paint “Aunt Mary” for his personal collection. His passion for perfection often resulted inthe destroying of a canvas, only to start anew. Creating only 6-12 canvases ayear, each glow with a magical presence that depict his unmistakable style. Many of his canvases through the years have been placed in public and corporatesettings. \"Diligent Journey\" is an example that now resides at MercyRegional Medical Center in Durango. His art will continue to intrigue andentertain today, and for all time..
