African Congo Kuba authentic tribally used helmet mask, large, abundant indications of significant use and ageThis is an African helmet mask, most likelyKuba (from the Congo) or Chokwe (Angola). The typical angular cut of the coiffure around the ears is typically Kuba. The bulging slit eye is correct for both Kuba and Chokwe. The small mouth with filed teeth is more Chokwe, as are the facial stripes. This piece is very large an impressive, and is topped by a \"stovepipe\" which served to support a superstructure. The overall patina is rich, but innotonthe surface of the wood.The cavernous interior of the helmet mask shows great age and wear as well, with an old repair to what appears to be insect damage.
Age and Provenance The prior owner (it was claimed) had collected these pieces in the 1950\'s while living in Africa. Naturally, unsubstantiated provenance claims claims are just hearsay, but now you have all my info. I am of the opinionthat this piece dates to the colonial era, most likely pre-1950. I base this on the high level of workmanship, the authentic surface patina, the functional \"stovepipe\", the wear to the interior, and the honest-looking repair(s).
