This is a collection of 3 civil war letters from a D Kellog to his sister in early 1862. Two of the letters have covers one with stamp and PORT ROYAL S.C. JUN 10 postmark, the other is a patriotic cover post marked US SHIP 3 CTS. I have transcribed the patriotic cover letter, it is headed Beaufort S.C. Jan the 10, 1862. Some of the more interesting contents are as follow: \"we had quite a time Wesyeanzday as the Negroes say and we went over to the main (land) to rec. I guess they were not very pleased to sea us they tried hard to hit us with their Bom shells but they did not do our Regiment any damage\" \"I never thought the men would stand fire so well when ever a shell would burst over their heads they would laugh and shout at the rebels\" \" the 3 Michigan Regiment were very bold they did not mind their fire, they killed two Michigan men and wounded 5\" \"the rebels moved in behind the battery with their guns and they fired volleys at our men, our men returned the fire they shot several rounds and then retreated back, they knew their was no use in their standing their fire -------the right wing of our company went around to the left of the Battery they thought they would come in behind of it but they soon found out it would not do for the Rebels had drawn up in line of the Battery before their own men had a signal Flag to wave at the Gun Boats to let them know where to throw the shells--------about this time our men gave a loud cheer and then the Rebels gave one, by the sound of the Rebels their must have been 8 or 10 thousand for about 2 miles their was one roar that made the woods ring\" \"it is about 4 miles from the river they throwed shells into Gardner crossing they said horses and riders fell in all directions, it must have been a hard time for the Rebels, the men said where the Rebels had taken their dead away that their was hands and legs that had been shot awf (off), some of our men helped to bring three dead rebels that the rebels did not get------the Rebels came in the night with a Flag of truce and carried away two wagon loads of men were recovered, their was150 men killed the first afternoon----their was a great many killed that afternoon their must been many more killed the next day for they throwed 8 times as many shells\".
This is a flavour of the content, there is much more mention of the Rebels, Negroes, Gun Boats and battle information. I believe this is probably describing the battle at Port Royal in early 1862. I am thinning out my collection and specialising more on field gear. Happy to answer any questions, letters were bought many years ago from a reputable dealer in the US.
