You are offerding an American President Lines (APL,Inc.) House Flag Pin. This pin measures about 7/8” wide by 3/4”high. It is screw back and has a “GEMSCO”hallmark on the back. It is inexcellent condition. I’m not sure ifthis is a lapel pin or part of a hat badge.

APL, Inc. (formerlyAmerican President Lines) was formed by the US Maritime Commission in 1938to head off the impending bankruptcy of the Dollar Line, the leading carrierbetween the US west coast and Asia. The Flag, red with a white eagle and awhite star in each corner, was intended to continue the use of the Dollar Line’sred and white colors while evoking the U. S. Presidential Flag, which at thetime was blue with an eagle and four white stars. The unusually longproportions are as shown on the APL website. American President Linesofficially changed its name to APL, Inc., several years ago and is now asubsidiary of NOL (formerly Neptune Orient Lines) of Singapore.
