A Pair of Reticulated Chestnut Baskets w. Stands by Samson, Edme et Cie - c. 1870

This is a fine pair of reticulated chestnuts baskets, with matching stands, made by the well-regarded porcelain factory of Samson.

The matching ovoid baskets feature bands of basket-weave style reticulation at the top. The basket-weave is overlaid with fine paste floral ornament, in yellow and cranberry with green cross hatching between the flowers. The pierced rims have applied curvilinear handles on either end.

The lower two-thirds of the baskets are solid, withelaborate armourial plaques on the front, in the centre. The solid portion of each basket is banded,top and bottom, with gilt fleur-de-lis. Asiatic floral sprays, in shades of cranberry, rust, blue, yellow, gold and green surround the bodies, on either side of the armourial plaques. The bottoms rest on flat, oval bases.

The matching oval stands are decorated with the same reticulated borders and floral decorated middles, with central armourial plaques. The stands rest on raised, inset rims around the oval bases.

Esme Samson et Cie, was founded in Paris in 1845. The renowned copyists specialized in recreations of Chinese export porcelain.

These elegant and rare chestnut baskets would make a wonderful and unusual addition to a fine collection of Continental porcelain.

Marked: On the backs of each basket and stand with ersatz \"Chinese\" letters.

Measures:Baskets: 9 1/2\" L x 6 1/2\" H x 4\"H. Stands: 10\" L x 1 1/2\" H x 7 3/4\" W.

Excellent Condition: A few tiny chips to a couple of the flowers on the gallery overlay. No other damage or restoration.
