An ancient Apulian Messapian ware trozella, dating to the 4th Century BC.

Standing on a splayed foot, with rounded body, tapered, cylindrical neck and flaring rim. The wonderfully elaborate, tall, angular handles decorated with applied rosettes. Covered with a buff slip and painted in brown with encircling bands, linked lattices and swastikas.

A beautiful example of one of the most elegant ceramic shapes known from the ancient world.

Width: 6 1/2 inches

Condition: Three fragments on the feet reattached, otherwise unrestored.

Provenance:

From the collection of Professor Geoffrey Wilson,founding father of the Warwick Law School. Purchased from Sotheby\'s, 31st October 2003, lot 39.

Previously in the distinguished collection of Agatha and Charles Sadler, purchased from John Hewett sometime between 1954 - 1992.

Pictures of this piece on display in the Sadler home will be supplied to the new owner.
