Ancient Chinese Buddha Head - Northern Zhou to Sui Dynasty Circa 570 - 590 A.DCarved from sandstone, highly detailed. See photos for condition.
This exceptionally finely carved head of a Buddha is datable to the end of the Northern Zhou or early Sui Dynasty by the slightly differentiated Ushnisha and the relative squareness of the face with eyes that are more horizontal than those of Northern Qi Buddhas. Quite rare, as this period lasted only 20 years. The attention to detail is very good, with each curl of the hair individually carved, and the eyebrows and lids are defined by crisp incised lines. Truly a beautiful and superb early Chinese Buddhist sculpture.
Museum-mounted, measures 9.5\" tall x 4\" wide.
Head itself is 6\" tall. Hardwood base is 3.5\" square.
