A striking and sereneming-ch\'i pottery figure of a government official,dating to theSix Dynasties (possibly Northern Wei)220 - 589 AD.

This kneeling offical isa particularly large example of its type, and is a beautiful example of ancient Chineseming-ch\'i artistic styles. With a highly emotive aura,the stylised features reflect the contemporary tendencies of Buddhist art, withthelarge squarehead bent forward in animitation of large-scale statuary, and the mouth modeled with a gentle, serene smile. Despite these stylistic influences,the artist has alsodisplayed a clear interest in reproducing the natural form of his subject, with the major components of the body confidentlyarticulated.

Figuressuch as these reveal a great deal about life in ancient Chinese society, this individual has his hands clasped in a traditional sign of respect whilst kneeling towards his master, emphasizing the social hierarchies of ancient Chinese society. His kuxi robes and their full length sleeves are the attire of an educated man, his rank is evident from the wedge shaped cap, denoting his status as a government official.

Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi (terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian, he was a prolific collector, well respected authority and author of the major publication \"Ancient Chinese ceramic sculpture from Han through T\'ang\". Schloss arrived in the US from Latvia in 1940. He was an accomplished cartoonist, working for many years at the New York times. The Schloss collection is rare in that it truly represents an educated collection of art; Schloss was immersed in Chinese ming-chi art and only collectedbeautiful examples of specific types, as well as the unusual, the charming and the rare.
