Wearing a close fitting leather helmet, breastplate and upper arm guards underneath long robes,this vibrantfigure is depictedin thetraditional attire of aNorthernQi warrior.He stands to attention, with his fists clenched tightly against his midriff and feet firmly together. The martial spirit ofthe piece is distinct fromthegracile form of its subject; his benign expression and sensitively rendered features provide a serene quality.He isshown moustached with a vibrant rosecomplexion,providing a wonderful sense of individuality.

The short lived but important Northern QiDynastymarked the beginning ofa revival in Chinese ceramic art stylesafter the cataclysmic wars and the social chaos of the 4th century.The Northern Qiproduced trulybeautiful artifacts which are now recognizedas the bedrock upon which ming-ch\'i art styles reached their zenith under the laterTang Dynasty. As such, thisartefact represents a seminal moment in the development of ancient Chinese ceramics.

Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi (terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian, he was a prolific collector, well respected authority and author of the major publication \"Ancient Chinese ceramic sculpture from Han through T\'ang\". Schloss arrived in the US from Latvia in 1940. He was an accomplished cartoonist, working for many years at the New York times. The Schloss collection is rare in that it truly represents an educated collection of art; Schloss was immersed in Chinese ming-chi art and only collectedbeautiful examples of specific types, as well as the unusual, the charming and the rare.
