A Chinese Song Dynasty zodiac qingbai vase, dating to 1127 – 1279 AD.
Sitting upon a ring base, this beautiful vase has a tall, slender form, the neck with crimped appliqued decoration. With its crisp pale blue glaze – this wonderful piece has an ethereal, even heavenly quality.The upper body with vivid decoration featuring a number of animals of the zodiac including; a dragon creeping around the surface of the vessel, a barking dog and a fenghuang (Chinese phoenix). Beneath are twelve elderly figures, representing the twelve signs of the zodiac and the passing of the years.
A well preserved example of its type, covered in the iconic qingbai glaze, produced at Jingdezhen, it can be viewed as a direct precursor to China\'s iconic blue and white porcelain.
Height:18 1/2inches.
Condition: Very good, some small chips,with fine preservation of the original glaze, unrestored.
Provenance:
This piece is from a large number of mostly Chinese antiques, purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum & Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Scans of the exhibition flyer, obtained from the previous owner, can be supplied to the buyer upon request.
