Ancient Greek Italic Daunian Painted Pottery Jug - 500 Bc For Sale
Alarge, quality, ancient Italic Daunian Olpe, of very large dimensions, dating to approximately 500 B.C.
It is tastefully painted with red and amber bands externally on the body and handle, as well as inside the flared circular rim.
This piece dates to the Daunian II period (approximately 550-400 B.C.) and is painted in so called "subgeometric" style. Daunia was a historical region in southern Italy about which little is known. Unlike the Apulian Greeks, the Daunian potters were, on the whole, more influenced by native Italic ceramic traditions. This is a particularlynice example
Despite their great beauty, Daunian pottery has been little studied, relative to other ceramics from the region.
Condition: Very good condition for a genuine ancient ceramic. It has a small chip on the rim and handle, otherwise intact and unrestored. Surviving encrustation and root marks are a reassuring sign of authenticity.
Height: 8 inches.
Width: 7 1/2inches.
Ex. S. collection, United Kingdom, acquired 1980's.
