Ancient Roman or Iron Age Sword

Please forgive my ignorance as I do not know much about swords. I was told that this is either a Roman or Iron Age sword. I purchased it at an sale about 2 years ago because - well - who doesn\'t want to own an old sword. Looking to purge because my wife says I have too much \"stuff\". Anyway, the sword is about 22\" long (see pics). Looks like it has aged or something as it is all black. When I bought it someone had removed the grip and looked like they tried to clean up the metal part where the handle would be. I haven\'t really taken it to an expert, but I did email a sword expert online and was told it might also be a spear converted to a short sword. I did not get any more details as they are in the UK and I am in the US. I really do not know any more about this. I tried putting in all the info I know. If you know more please tell me and I\'ll update the ad. Item is sold as is based on the photos. It\'s not in perfect condition since it\'s really old.
