DETAILS:

Thisancient Native American knife handle was made from a section of a white tail deer’sjaw bone, which is called a mandible. One can see the human cut marks in the bone where it was cut down to fitinto the hand--Please see macro photo # 7. The small, 5” long knifehandle still has five of the deer teeth set into the bone that were used as thecutting edge or as the grip portion of a knife’s handle.

Ihave included an authentic, Paleo-Indian Gray Flint Blade that was found separatelyStoddard County, Missouri. Althoughfound in a different area of Missouri than the handle, both the shape and styleof the carefully knapped stone blade made of gray made of gray flint would havevery similar to the one that was once originally hafted to the deer jaw handlethat was found in Missouri.

Thisartifact made of deer bone and teeth was the handle of a stone-tipped knifethat was broken off in ancient times hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Aknapped stone blade made of flint like the one included in this sale, wouldhave been hafted to the end of the deer mandible. The bone was broken off inantiquity and the original flint blade lost. But it appears to have then been reused with the sharp teeth acting asthe cutting portion of the knife.

Thebone handle has stable cracks that are appropriate for its extremely oldage. The deer bone has a wonderful, oldpatina that has been worn smooth by the hands of an ancient hunter and isguaranteed authentic and original.

Boththe handle and the stone blade are in “as found” condition and were personalfinds of Mr. Richard Whittle in Missouri. Please see photos for details and offer accordingly.

Withouta radio-carbon test, it is difficult to date this bone artifact. But it dates to known examples from at leastthe Woodland Period (500 BC—1100 AD) and perhaps much older to the ArchaicPeriod, which is also known as the Lithic or Paleo-Indian Period that lastedfrom 18,000-8,000 BCE.

NativeAmerican Hand Tools

EarlyNative American knives were used as tools for hunting and other chores, likeskinning animals. Knives consisted of ablade made of stone, bone, or deer antlers, fastened to a wooden handle. Thin flintor quartz blades were flacked from larger stones and probably mounted in deerbone handle and then used as knives. Deerbone mandibles were often also made into war clubs.
