This is a fabulous ancient Scandinavian Viking silver finger ring, dating to the 9th - 11th century A.D. The ring is formed from graduated rods of silver knotted together, the terminals welded to form a complete round ring. This example is typical of the elaborate skills of the Viking age jeweller, of a complex yet iconic design of ring (seehere) first introduced to Britain and Ireland during the 10th century. This example recovered during dredging work, is intact and of good stable silver though with a deep patination due to silts. Today the ring is in perfectly wearable condition if one is so inclined!
