Andrew Jackson - Autograph Letter Signed as Letter Signed (ALS) as President, \"Andrew Jackson,\" one page, 8\'\' x 10\'\', May 25, 1835, Washington. Jackson writes a letter of introduction to Lt. Col. William Davenport on behalf of General Patterson. In Fine condition, with typical mailing folds (one of which bisects Jackson\'s signature), a few small holes not affecting any text, some scattered wrinkling, and a separation along the central vertical fold that has been expertly repaired on the verso.At the time of this letter, Lt. Col. Davenport was in charge of Fort Armstrong located in Rock Island, Illinois.Robert Patterson (January 20, 1792 – August 7, 1881) was born in Cappagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. His family emigrated to the United States in 1799, where he eventually became involved in banking at a young age. He volunteered for service during the War of 1812 and rose from captain to colonel in the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia before joining the United States Army.Following the war he left the military and began a wholesale business in Pennsylvania. He became influential in state politics as a Jacksonian Democrat. He was one of the members of the Pennsylvania delegation that nominated Andrew Jackson for president in 1828. He later cast Pennsylvania\'s electoral votes for Martin Van Buren in 1836.Patterson fought in the war with Mexico as a Major General of volunteers and on Winfield Scott\'s staff. Patterson returned to business after the war with Mexico becoming very wealthy with a sugar plantation in Louisiana and 30 cotton mills in his home state. When the Civil War began, Patterson was commissioned a Major General of Pennsylvania volunteers and was given command of a district that included Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. He commanded a brief engagement with Colonel Thomas J. Jackson on July 2, 1861, at the Battle of Hoke\'s Run and produced an early Union victory.
