Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, assuming office in 1865 after Lincoln died of assassination less than a week after the end of the Civil War.

Born in a log cabin in 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina to a poor family. He became a tailor as a teenager and having no formal education, he was largely educated by his eventual wife. Over time, Andrew Johnson became prosperous enough to buy property and he even acquired several slaves, who worked in his home. He served in the Tennessee legislature and the US House of Representatives, which he left when he became the governor of Tennessee. He eventually left that position to become a US Senator.

Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Johnson was the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the United States. He resigned from the Senate in 1862 when Lincoln appointed him as Tennessee’s military governor. Later seeking re-election Lincoln chose Johnson, though a Democrat, as his running mate. Following Lincoln’s assassination, Johnson took a moderate approach to restoring the South to the Union which led to clashes with the Radical Republicans . In 1868 he was impeached by Congress but was acquitted by one vote. He decided not to run for reelection.

Returning to Tennessee, Johnson ran for the US Senate in 1872 but lost. However, he persisted and won election to the Senate in 1875, though his tenure was brief. He died later that year while visiting family and was buried in Greenville with an American Flag and a copy of the Constitution.

This medal came loose as part of an estate. It comes with no box, nor any information. The medal has scratches and flaws on it. If asked, I would have a difficult time rating the condition of this medal.
