William Trevor, born William Trevor Cox, (24 May 1928 – 20 November 2016) was a County Cork born Irish novelist, playwright and short story writer. One of the elder statesmen of the Irish literary world,he was widely regarded as one of the greatest contemporary writers of short stories in the English language. He first achieved prominence in1964 with the publication of what he considered to be his first book, The Old Boys, winner of the Hawthornden Prize for Literature; his actual first book, A Standard of Behaviour, was published in 1958 but met with little critical success with Trevor later disowning the work and refusing to have it ever republished. His other notable books include: The Day We Got Drunk on Cake and Other Stories (1967); Mrs Eckdorf in O\'Neill\'s Hotel (1969); The Love Department (1966); and Angels at the Ritz and Other Stories (1975) - winner of the Royal Society of Literature Award.
