Animal Trap Co. Duck Decoy c.1918-1938, Rare Endangered \"Spectacled Eider\":
$1800.00

Up for sale is an authentic Animal Trap Company of America, Spectacled Eider Critically Endangered Species Duck Decoy, circa 1918-1938 as indicted by the material of solid wood with glass eyes, and early Victor Stamp. It is very old, factory carved, and made with a yellow bill and features a solid wood body with holes on the bottom where a weight would be indicating its a true working decoy. It appears to be unsigned but is stamped signed, Victor. It also appears to be an exceedingly rare \"Spectacled Eider\" decoy making it highly collectible as they were only found in Alaska at the time as well as today. With declining numbers, they are currently endangered and facing possible extinction in the near future. While the early Animal Trap Co. Decoys tend to sell around $175-$350 retail, I have never been able to find another Victor Spectacled Eider in any collection or Museum which may make this a one of a kind prototype, or very limited run and important historical piece which is why I have it priced at a premium as it is difficult to value due to rarity. It could possibly bring a few thousand in the right collector sale.

The longest producer of hunting decoys, the Animal Trap Company of North America began producing in 1848. After World War I, the company began producing wooden duck decoys. Animal Traps are known for the unique carving pattern. Decoys which have the\"VICTOR\" cold stamped were produced during 1918-1938, and beginning in 1939 wood decoys had round or rectangular ink stamps on the bottom. These stamps also indicated where the decoy was made. Production in Pascagoula, Mississippi began in 1939 and continued through 1949. This information was from the unlimited ducks website, one of the experts on Victor Decoys.

The form and style is looks great for an early US factory decoy. It is in good condition for age with many imperfections and areas of wear from usage appropriate to age. Please see all photos and make offers accordingly. This decoymeasures roughly 14 1/8\" long, the body is 6 1/8\" tall, and it is about 5\" wide. A very unusual styled high quality decoy and a extraordinary piece of early American Folk Art, a great decoy for any collection. Please see my other sales for more early pieces of Americana and folk art including two more very early decoys I have decided to sell from my personal collection acquired over the last 35 years in the antiques business.
