A \'MAUVAIS QUART D\'HEURE\' by S.TheyreSmith

This is a unique handwritten play by the Victorianplaywright SpenserTheyre Smith - author of children\'s books like The Fairy Horn andplays such as Old Cronies, A Happy Pair and His Own Enemy (which were put on and published in London andNew York).

This seems to be a play which - other than this handwritten manuscript - isentirely unrecorded.

It has been privatelyprinted - bound in a red leather, with gold lettering on the front, and inside is a small notebook, with the play\'s text handwritten in black ink in a neat hand. I believe this to beTheyre Smith\'s personal copy, andthus that this is his writing. A few crossed-out words and replacementsconfirm this, although a couple of mistakes suggest it was being copied out neatly from another version.

The title relates to a short but unpleasant experience - and using \'mauves quartd\'heure\' as a phrase to describe this was very popular in the middle of the nineteenth century. Judging byTheyre Smith\'s other works, this dates the play (and this book) to the period 1860-1890 (the latest ofTheyre Smith\'s plays).
