The Holy Bible,Containing theOld and NewTestaments,Translated Out of theOriginal Tongues; And With the FormerTranslationsDiligently Compared and Revised.PHILADELPHIA:Printed by William Young, Bookseller, No. 52,Second Street, The Corner of Chesnut-Street 5.M, DCC, XCIV.(1794).With numerous inscriptions by apparently Lois Titus (maiden name George), given to her by her mother, Hannah (or Joannah) George, in 1805.
Very rare 1794 Philadelphia printed William Young Bible, famously known for being the second English language Bible printed in America in overall Very Good condition. Upon research, it appears the first printing of the William Young Bible was in 1790, the second in 1792 and this, being an example of the third printing, in 1794. Bible is complete and retains its complete structural integrity with the original binding still strongly intact and no pages loose, detached, detaching or missing. Book still is bound in its original leather covers. The boards and spine are still very strong and sturdy though there is some superficial crazing/cracking to the leather, especially on the front cover which is apparent, but has no structural bearing to the book. Outer edges of the boards show some rubs and chips as does the spine face. Reverse cover shows some worming holes as is very common for very old books. This worming occurs in two places at the end of the New Testament, towards the bottom of the pages and at the middle inner margin, the bottom being more significant and spanning from the first page of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews to the end of the book. The smaller worming spot from the page containing the beginning of Chapter VI of Romans to the end of the book. Aside from this there are only some very minor tatter spots, some pages with dog-ear folds and standard browning to the interior pages. Printed words still appear vibrant throughout the book and the pages are still sturdy, easy to casually handle and not at all brittle.
Inscriptions from the Titus family include birth and death records. It appears Lois Titus lost two children. There appears written in very old ink on the front free endpaper \"Job 23 3-4\".
This very rare and impressive, historical and compelling Holy Bible measures 6 3/4 x 4 x 2 inches and weighs 1 pound.
