VERY RARE 1817 PRINCESS CHARLOTTE LUSTRE BOWL

This rare pink lustre porcelain bowl, is decorated with an en-grisalle design, it was produced in 1817 to commemorate the passing of Princess Charlotte, the future Queen of England.

The decoration on the front and on the inner base of the bowl shows the allegorical figures of Britannia and Faith mourning at the tomb of Princess Charlotte and the design on the back portrays angels to guide her spirit to Heaven.

Princess Charlotte was the only child of George, the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and Queen Caroline and granddaughter of George III. She was thus first in line of succession to the British Throne and had she lived she would have taken the throne in place of Victoria.

Princess Charlotte married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816 and tragically, died in childbirth on November 5th, 1817. Her death is said by some to have contributed to the madness of King George III.

The cup is 5 1/4\" - (135mm) in diameter and 2 1/4\" - (60mm) deep it is made from fine translucent porcelain. lt is in excellent condition without any chips.cracks or crazing, only some slight rubbing to the pink lustre rim and a small flea-bite where one of the firing feet has been removed, normal in the production of these items from this era. The colors are bright and vibrant, the pictures are intact, without fading, chipping or loss of color, as seen in so many other pieces from this time period.

It is unusual to find an early piece such as this in such amazing condition.

****Included FREE with this item is a First Edition British copy of “Prinny’s Daughter” a Biography of Princess Charlotte of Wales.****

SHIPPING AND HANDLING POLICY

We pride ourselves on our superior shipping and handling of your treasures. The comments of our customers reflect this care. Many of these items are fragile, one of a kind, rare and scarce and we take that seriously. We package using proper padding materials to ensure your items are received in the condition you bought them in. With this in mind, please understand that we are conscientious in charging you only the most basic of charges to ensure the safety of your purchases. We use USPS as much as possible and their rates have been raising steadily over the years, this we have no control over. We will endeavor to keep the handling costs as low as possible but will not use lower standards to ship, as this may cause your items to arrive in poor condition.

A word on glass/porcelain: When your package arrives, in adverse weather conditions such as extreme hot or cold, please allow your package to come to room temperature before opening it. Vintage glass is very fragile and susceptible to extreme changes in temperature, i.e. bringing in a package on a winter day, into your warm home, so allow it to “warm up” or “cool down” before opening under these extremes, this will help to prevent breakage due to temperature change.

ANTIQUE/COLLECTABLE GLASS POLICY

As with all antique/depression glass there may be some manufacturing imperfections including: bubbles, straw marks, cold shear marks, tooling marks, inclusions and even a little roughness on the mold seams..... these are to be expected and actually help to authenticate the item. Be wary of “perfect” or “mint” claims as reproduction pieces are plentiful in the marketplace and usually are without any of the above listed imperfections. An educated consumer is our best customer.
