A rare find indeed! I believe this antique bonnet dates to the 1840s or 1850s, but was probably also worn during the Civil War years.
It is in super condition considering its age, especially the silk taffeta plaid ribbons. One of the ribbons was pieced together by hand although this could have been done when the bonnet was created.
I believe it is made out of trim called passmenterie. It\'s certainly not straw but gives that lacy effect. The rows of trim have all been stitched together by hand, as well as the buckrum lining in the crown.
This hat was relegated to an attic or trunk for over 150 years and has suffered some breaks in the brim from being pressed flat. There are also breaks here and there and loose threads along the edges of the brim, but again, I feel it is in truly amazing condition for its age.
