Morals and Dogma is a collection of thirty-two essays which provide a philosophical rationale for the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. The lectures provided a backdrop for the degrees by giving lessons in comparative religion, history and philosophy.
Although the copyright on this book states 1871, this scarce second edition was actually printed in 1881. This actually followed the very rarely seen first edition of 1871.
To accurately distinguish the two editions you must first look at the ‘Masonic year’ shown on the bottom of the title page.
The ultra-rare first edition has the numbers “5632.” This is the only true first edition printing of this title.
The second edition has the numbers “5641” at the bottom of the title page AND 1871 printed on the copyright page, but the actual print date of 1881 is not listed anywhere on the book. This is the book I have presented for you today.
