Rare Victorian 1891 H'm Sterling Silver Owl & Green Man Decorated Go To Bed Night Light by W Comyns
This Antique Night Light Taper Candle Chamber Stick measures approximately 2 3/8 inches or 62 mm across its length from the top of the owls head to the front rim of the body by 2 inches or 51 mm across the widest part of its body from side to side and it stands a fraction under 1 inch or 25 mm tall to the top of the owls head.
The Night Light Taper Candle Chamber Stick is made from sterling silver with a circular base that has been wonderfully raised relief and engrave decorated with stylized leaves around the mythical architectural face of the Green Man and he has a scrolling vine like stem that has an inverted bell shaped taper candle holder at the top coming out of his open mouth, the night light has a delightful raised relief and engrave decorated owl on the side rim of its base that acts as a handle and it has Not been engraved with a previous ownersinitials or family monogram all as photographed below, the chamber stick would have been used with either a thin candle called a taper or with a lit Vesta as a Go To Bed night light and the upper body of the base has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
W.C - Lion Passant - r in script - Anchor
W.C is the famous London silversmith or makers mark of William Comyns &Sons Ltd, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the letter r in script is the date letter for 1891 and the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
This Go To Bed Night Light or Taper Candle Chamber Stick hasNo Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes andNo Repairs that I can find,the night light stands straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the silver hallmark is still clearly legible although as this night light is a used antique it doeshave some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected anda gentle clean would not goamiss.Personally I think that this antique Go To Bed or night light would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection and that it can still be used today, I also think that it's a very rare antique novelty item that looks absolutely considering thatit's over 120 years old.
