Antique, 17th – 18th century, Islamic, Turkish Ottoman gun powder flask made of carved bone. The outer side is embellished with finely carved, in relief, an image of the Solak archer of Ottoman elite infantry unit Janissary, wearing the traditional Janissaries uniform with characteristic tall hat, armed with large bow and quiver with arrows, the inner side carved, in relief, with Ottoman bow, and carry case, bordered on the top and bottom with carved leaves-ornament. Fitted on the top with bone nozzle, and two iron loops on the side for suspension.
The Janissaries (Ottoman Turkish: يڭيچرى yeniçeri, meaning "new soldier" were elite infantry units that formed the Ottoman Sultan\'s household troops and personal bodyguards.
MEASUREMENTS: Height: 26 cm (10 1/4 in).
CONDITION: In its original good condition showing the age and usage with a glossy patina, the base possibly with filled repairs.
