Edwardian London Hallmarked Sterling Silver Hanau Marriage or Wager Cup by Karl Kurz dated 1903
The marriage or wager cup from sterling silver in the form of a girl or lady that has a bell shaped skirt and she is holding two scrolled arms above her head that support a small cup above her head, the marriage or wager cup has been wonderfully raised relief and engrave decorated and it has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogramall as photographed below, the rear side of its lower body has been impressed with the Hanau silversmith or makers marks of Karl Kurz from Kesselstadt in ofGermany and the front of the cups lower body has also been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver imported item hallmarks that read as follows,
T.H - Lion Passant - h - F - Leopard Head
T.H is the London sponsor or importers mark of Theodore Hartman, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the letter h is the date letter for 1903, the letter F is the letter that denotes that the item is of Foreign origin and the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office.
The origins of these cups are 'Jungfraubecher' made in Germany around 1565 and in use for all of the 17th century, the cups have the look of a young girl with a wide long skirt in the form of a cup supporting over her head a smaller swiveling cup, the silver wager cup was created for use in wedding banquets where the spouse drank wine from the bigger cup and offered his bride to drink from the smaller one avoiding pouring out even a drop of its content. The production of cups in this form was resumed at the end of 19th century (particularly in Germany and Holland) for export to UK and USA not for weddings but for wager use.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
The Marriage or Wager Cup hasNoDents, No Holes, No Splits, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the cup stands straight, the decoration and definition is very crisp, both the large and swivel cups hold liquid without leaking, the smaller cup swivels as it should with ease, the silver hallmarks are still clearlylegible although as this is a used antique marriage or wager cup it does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with thepatinaof age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss.Personally I think that this antique marriage or wager cup can still be used today and that itwould make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's over 110 years old.
