This is an Antique 1909 Arts & Crafts Pyrography Wood Plaque Youth Football,a Craft Project fromFlemish Art Co. New York.

The 5\" x 11\" plaque is made from3/8\" plywood. My understanding is thatcommercially produced craft project kitsbecause very popular around the turn of the Century, and pyrographykits were particularly popular, aided by the invention of low cost, plug in burners, with sets of removeable tips for different line widths, etc. Plaques, handkerchiefor glove boxes, and many otherpyrographypieces from this era are often found at antique sales and in shops.Flowers and Art Nouveau style ladies, were a common theme. This great looking plaque has a more unusual theme of a young football player infootballtogs with anearly style football under his arm.

The Flemish Art Trademark & Logo is burned into the back of the plaque as seen.In addition to thepyrographylines of the image, the background around theyoung player, and the two decorations at the top havehave the backgrounds, hand carved out leaving the foreground image in relief. Theperson who completed the project carved the date, 10/9/09 into the back, partially over the Flemish Art logo.

Condition

Theplaque is overall in good condition. There are a couple of spots on the front where the carving went into the next ply, leaving lighter colored wood in that are as see. The piece is somewhat rough, consistent with this type of craft project.

On the back, you will see two deep grooves in the wood that both cross the Flemish logo. As found, a previous owner had inappropriately used a spring loaded brass plate hanger as a hanger for this piece. This should not have been done, and the heavy springs cut into the soft wood. I carefully removed the hanger, and since I believe it is not appropriate for use on this piece I am not including it in this listing.
