Made of stoneware (a type of hard ceramic). Condition is perfect, with no damage or repairs anywhere. Impressed with the Merkelbach & Wick hallmark, who were located in Grenzhausen, Hesse-Nassau, Prussia (now Hohr-Grenzhausen, Rhineland Palatinate). From 1914.

This is the first and only Jewish beer stein I have ever seen. While a number of vicious and disgusting anti-semitic beer steins are known and were produced in large quantities from the 1890\'s through the 1930\'s, a beer stein proudly featuring the Jewish Hospital of Munich is fascinating; it was likely a specially commissioned beer mug made in a limited batch for some prominent members of the Jewish community of Munich in 1914. This is what I was able to find out about this hospital;

The Jewish Hospital of Munich existed until 1942, when it was vacated due to a personal order of Heinrich Himmler. All patients, the head physician along with his wife and three nurses were deported to Theresienstadt. In 1944 it was destroyed by Allied bombing. Today there is a small monument commemorating the Jewish staff from this hospital who were killed in Theresienstadt.

This beer stein was part of a Judaica collection, many years ago the owner decided to glue on a good luck piece --- a Jewish amulet / hamsa ---- by the pewter handle. I leave it up to the new owner if they want to get it removed, I decided to leave it be.

Insured shipping to anywhere in the USA is $20. Registered airmail worldwide is $50.
