Shrewsbury, England.Description:This is the most beautiful, 19th century, paste set silver brooch. It would have been made by hand in France and is a gorgeous example of the type.The beauty of antique paste is that it was set in pieces of jewellery that were made with the same care and attention to detail as their fine gold and diamond counterparts. It is not accurate to call fine paste jewellery \'costume jewellery\' in the modern sense- it is fine in it\'s own right.This brooch would have been worn in the evening and was designed to look fantastic in the candle light of an evening dinner party or other social event- possibly in the centre of an off the shoulder, lace flounce collar as was the fashion of the day.The paste is a very hard glass, hand cut in exactly the same way as a diamond would be and when foiled at the back (like these paste gems have been) equally as sparklyThis is an early 19th century example in my opinion. I come to this conclusion after taking the style of setting into account. If it were older it would be usual for there to be a little black dot at the very back, centre of each paste gem.This is a very beautiful piece of historic jewellery and will be a great find for the right person.
Condition:Excellent. All of the paste are original and in good condition.
Measurements:7.2 cm by 2 cm and 1.3 cm in depth.
