The shape of this charming antique tea cup and saucer set isthe star of the show. The unusual rectangularshape with fluted corners is set off by the energy of the organic hand painteddecoration. The bird and flower motif demonstratesa definite Asian influence that is only strengthened by the elaborate framethat is used to decorate the edges of the set.The vibrant colors of the framing element and the bird vignettes practicallyleap of the white porcelain background.The gold embellishments seem to recall embroidery, perhaps a clue to theorigin of the pattern.

The pieces are unmarked.The cup measures 2 ½” tall, 2” wide, and 2 3/8” across (not includingthe handle). The saucer is 3 ¾” wide, 4 ¼”long, and 7/8” tall. The set is inexcellent condition for its age, with no crack, chips, or other damage. There is a very small amount of paint loss(primarily to the gold on the rim) and the bottom has some shelf wear.
