a wonderfull andauthentic antique

made by the Toba Batak people, from the northern part of the island Sumatra, Indonesia

made between 1850 and 1920

this stick now has been for more then 50 years in Holland -in one private Dutch collection

it is wonderfullycarved; the carving is somewhat primitiv but reaches to a high artistic standard

the wood has a very muchauthenticpatine andremains of old dirt and greases in the lower, untouchedparts

- the top is with it\'s originalhorsehair

- it has no visible pupuk holes

on the front, from the top down we can see:

-7 human seatedfigures, riders, witha buffalo head held in their hands

the lowest is seated on a fully carved buffalo

- the undecorated grip

- 2 human figures, eachholding a lizard by it\'s tail, it\'s head down

- a snake, naga, with scaly skin, it\'s head upwards

- the first two human figuresdepict the twin brother and sister figures: Si Adji Donda Hatahutan and Si Tapi Radja Na Uasan

on the back, fromthe top down,we can see:

- 5 crawling animals, with scaly skin, tails down, no heads visible - the bodies seem to have grown into the Buffalo heads that are visible on the front

- the grip

- a long naga, snake - head upwards - delicate carved scaly skin

the staff ends with it\'s original metal cased end

condition: very good, authentic patine, no missing parts, no restorations

length: ca. 184cm /ca. 58 inch

weight: ca. 1040 gr
