A pleasing boxed chess set from my grandparents\' home; they married in 1908 and most of their possessions and furniture dated from that era. From exploring the internet it appears that the set is either French or in the style of the French Regence sets

The pieces appear to be individually well-made and have concave bases. Some pieces vary a little in size; the black king is 97mm high with a 33mm base and white king is 94mm high with a 30mm base. The bishops have 2 side-cuts (flats) on their top rings and the knights have sad-looking eyes!

There is a small piece chipped off the black queen’s top ring (find a blue arrow in one of the photos). Otherwise there are just a few minor bumps from normal use and evidence of glue under some of the knights’ heads. Overall it’s a complete, tidy and usable set in nice condition.

The soft wood box is in fair condition; the lid has shrunk a little and is therefore loose in its bevelled runners, and there are a couple of woodworm holes in the end of the box but, just in case it’s active, it has now been treated with the appropriate fluid.

The box is about 8 inches (198mm) long x 4.25 inches (110mm) wide x 3 inches (78mm) high.
