Fresh from the collection of a longtime Civil War enthusiast is this tintype portrait of a Civil War Union soldier. Wearing a Union single-breasted 9-button shell jacket, he poses seated with his hands resting on his pants, which are tinted blue. Behind him is a painted backdrop of a Union encampment, showing a cannon, white tents, and a red and blue tinted 35 star U.S. Flag! This became the official U.S. Flag on July 4, 1863, adding a star for the new state of West Virginia. It remained in use until the U.S. government approved the 36 star Flag on July 4, 1865 (Nevada having become a state on October 31, 1864). This 1/6th plate tintype (2 1/2\" x 3\") is behind glass in a metal mat with a rectangular opening (measuring 2\" x 2 1/2\"), decorated around the edges with a floral pattern. This fits into a black Union Case (measuring 3 5/16\" x 3 3/4\" x 13/16\" when closed) with a paper label from \"S. PECK & CO.\" The case, mat, and tintype are in very good antique condition, with some blemishes and fine crackling in the emulsion (which appears to be stable). The mat is stamped \"HOLMES BOOTH & HAYDENS. SUPERFINE\" and \"WATERBURY CONN. NO. 32\" which suggests this soldier is from Connecticut. His weathered face and hard stare suggests he has seen his share of combat. As we are now amid the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, mementos such as this poignant portrait take on greater resonance as we\'re reminded of the sacrifice of millions of Americans, from soldiers to the president.
