Escudo de monja (Nun’s Shield)

Nun’s shields are an important and distinctive genre ofMexican art dating to the first third of the 17th century. These diminutivepaintings on metal invariably depict the Virgin Mary, whose purity and pietywere paradigms to which nuns aspired, and they were used to embellish thenecklines of ritual apparel. Worn only by nuns of pure Spanish lineage andbelonging to Mexico’s most elite families, these medallions also represent actsof resistance to Spanish ecclesiastical authorities who forbade the wearing ofornate jewelry.

This museum piece is and original antique bronze that wascast in Mexico at a Jesuit workshop, during the time of the Manila-Acapulco GalleonTrade. It is one of the earliest surviving medal images of Our Lady of Guadalupefrom the 17th century.

Its size is 4 inches, by 2.75 inches, and is 1/8thinch thick. The weight is 5.5 ounces
