This masterfully rendered oil on 1830’s millboard dates to the last years of the reign of George IV and is housed in its original gilt gesso and wood frame. Measuring just 13” x 11” overall (9 ¼” x 7 3/8” painting alone) it bears both framers and art supply labels of the period on back. A Much later sticker affixed to the back reads, “Durrell, MP”. As the images show the work has great presence for its modest size and has a pretty clean surface with in-painted loss visible in the lower right hand corner. The other corners of the millboard are rounded, but unseen when framed. You will note chips and very old repairs to the gesso; some glints of original leaf glint through subsequent layers of gold/gilding. All in all, it presents very attractively.
